Quick scan circularity

Understanding material flows

Many companies and organizations want to design and operate in a more circular manner. This means that they need to keep raw materials and products in the cycle with minimal loss of value and usability. The first question that arises is: how circular is my product or service right now? How circular are we, in comparison to competitors? The next question is how you can improve your score and which measures are most effective. Our circularity quick scan can help with this.

Circularity quick scan

To determine the circularity of our customers’ products or services, we have developed a circularity quick scan that quickly and clearly shows how a material flow moves through the chain.

Losses occur throughout chain. Thanks to the quick scan, a company or organization can quickly gain insight into which parts of the chain in particular reduce the value and usefulness of products and raw materials. You can also make visible what the effect on the entire chain is, in case a particular link in the chain would be approached differently. After all, not every measure has the same effect.

Quantifying performance

There are several indicators for determining circularity. First, we calculate the amount of raw materials that remain in the chain or leave it. We can further break this down into the proportion of reused materials and the proportion of recycled products and components. For many companies, it is just as important to know what this means in financial terms. After all, the loss of value and usability of products and raw materials costs money, but investments to counteract this must be recouped in some way. We can calculate this too.

Informed choices

The circularity quick scan requires the necessary expertise in materials and chain processes. Our engineers use their expertise and experience to get started right away. After all, there are so many issues that can be addressed. We help you weigh the options and focus on the measures that will have most effect.

Our approach provides guidance on, for example:

  • Designing circular products
  • Setting up a Product as a Service revenue model
  • Organizing return flows within and outside the company
  • Quantifying internal and government targets
  • Convincing investors, subsidy providers, and customers

The scan is a good starting point for both start-ups and existing companies to develop a substantiated strategy or concrete plan for a circular business model. Especially with the arrival of the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), our scan is a valuable tool for your sustainability reporting.

Life cycle analysis

The quick scan can be easily combined with a Life Cycle Assessment. An LCA shows the total environmental impact of a product throughout its life cycle. This includes energy consumption, transport costs, and the harmfulness of waste. An LCA is essential, for example, to ensure that environmental costs are fairly reflected in the cost of a product. The quick scan and an LCA complement each other well in order to approach sustainability from multiple perspectives.
