Biofuel and biomass

certification

Companies and governments are looking for alternatives for fossil fuels and resources. The demand for biofuels and biomass residues is therefore increasing. At the same time, legal sustainability requirements are becoming increasingly strict. That’s where certification comes in.

Need for reliable resources

US Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS2): certification of renewable fuels

The Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) program originates from the United States and aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by strengthening the renewable fuel industry. The program is part of the American Energy Act from 2005 and was expanded in 2007 under the Energy Independence and Security Act. Companies that produce renewable fuels for the US market need to renew their certification once every three years.

Engineering Review and Quality Assurance Plan

Partners for Innovation conducts, as an independent third party, audits for European industrial biofuels producers intending to access the US market. Since 2013 we have been working together with Control Union Certifications on the RFS2-certification of renewable fuels for the American market.

During an Engineering Review, Partners for Innovation checks whether a biofuel producer meets all the requirements and rules of the RFS2-program. In case of a positive report, the biofuel producer is certified and able to export their products to the United States.

Once they start exporting to the US, they can voluntary subscribe to a Quality Assurance Plan: in that case, the biofuel producer is regularly audited to monitor the quality of their production while exporting.

  • We performed over 70 audits for European and Asian biofuel producers
  • We have a long (+15 year) track record with good references of biofuel audits
  • We have a strong and long term partnership with an international certified body, Control Union

Our Engineering  Review and Quality Assurance plan process includes:

  1. Regulatory review – legal intelligence
  2. On-site review and compliance checks
  3. Sampling and quality testing operations
  4. Documentation review, reporting and conclusion

New opportunities

In addition to the US market, we are expanding our services to the European market as we notice an increased need for biofuel audits. We also see a high demand for ISCC audits, Dutch Double Counting audits, and a growing need for green electricity and natural carbon removal (peatlands, trees) audits.

Third party certification of own activities

In South Africa, Partners for Innovation runs a pellet factory. For our suppliers, customers and ourself its essential that the collection of biomass, processing and distribution of the pellets complies with the latest sustainability standards, e.g. FSC, ISCC, RSB and SBP. We strongly supported the certification system development. In South Africa we are now the only pellet factory with a SBP certificate.

Broad areas we are active in:

  • Biodiesel
  • Renewable diesel
  • Woody biomass
  • ISCC, FSC, RSB, SBP
  • Wood chips and pellets
