Applying recycled plastics

Project

Applying recycled plastics

How can we match the supply and demand of recycled plastic packaging material? Commissioned by Rijkswaterstaat and the Netherlands Institute for Sustainable Packaging we analysed the current market for plastics and the possible markets for recycled plastics.

Supply and demand of plastic recyclate

We mapped the current plastic packaging market and analysed the opportunities for using more plastic recyclate. In addition, we listed the technical, economic and organizational bottlenecks that chain parties encounter in practice. For this project, we worked together with Rebel.

The technical analysis shows that there are opportunities for using (more) recycled material in almost all markets, provided that the quality meets the requirements of market parties.

Especially in the construction and infrastructure, transport packaging and non-food packaging there are many insufficiently utilized possibilities. The economic analysis shows that more high quality (specific mono flows) is needed to better match demand and supply.

Plastic packaging waste as a raw material

In the Plastic Packaging Waste as Raw Material (KVG) program (financed by the Afvalfonds) KIDV and Rijkswaterstaat are carrying out pilots that promote the use of recycled plastics. Read more about the program and pilots.
